Lesson From a Stylist: Mixing Prints

How to Mix Prints

1.  Find two prints that have one or two of the same colors.  The jacket in the photo has black and white the shorts have black and white.

2.  Throw in an extra color from one of the pieces to break it up.  Notice in the photo there is a hint of nude in the jacket carried out in the silk blouse.  You could also use an accent color not already in the look.  It is great to mix textures here, see how the jacket is tweed and soft, with a silky blouse underneath.

3.  How to use accessories:  Pull from the existing color palette.  The white bag in the photo is pulled from the jacket and shorts.  The black shoes pulled from the shorts. Best to use the color that tied the look together, here the black and white are the common thread.

This is not an exact science, you'll have to play around to see what works, but this can give you a place to start from.  I hope this break down may help you!
