Health: Kara's Detox

Kara's Detox Guide

Follow these easy steps to cleanse your body!

Take This:
After much traveling and partying etc., I start to feel very run down. I always keep Emergen-C packs in my purse for a quick pick-me-up, to protect my immune system, and to add back vitamins and antioxidants I probably depleted by boozing:) I highly recommend adding these to your routine after a rough weekend or if you start to feel like you are getting sick.

Eat This:
Parsley is a natural diuretic and truly reduces bloat (It also freshens breath). Here's a Mediterranean Tabouli Salad recipe I found in "Hollywood Diet Secrets" by Kym Douglas and Cindy Pearlman, so you don't have to eat it plain:
-Salad:
6 bunches of parsley
1 cup of chopped cherry tomatoes
1/2 cup hemp seeds
1/2 cup chopped yellow onion
-Dressing:
1/2 cup of fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
5 cloves of garlic, peeled
-in food processor, chip the parsley using the S blade. Transfer the parsley into a large mixing bowl, and add the tomatoes, hemp seeds, and onion. Mix the ingredients together thoroughly with a spatula or wooden spoon. Mix dressing ingredients in a bowl or food processor.
*Other bloat-reducing foods you should eat: asparagus, dandelion greens, celery, watermelon, watercress, cucumber, and lemon juice.
Drink This:
Annemarie Colbin, a holistic nutritionist mentioned in "Eat, Drink, and Be Gorgeous" by Esther Blum, swears by this "Lemon Sour Power" drink to cleanse the body of toxins and waste and relieve bloating and gas:
-Juice half of an organic lemon, reserving juice in cup. Slice the rind from the juiced half in quarters and simmer in 1 1/4 cups of boiling water covered, for 10 minutes. Strain the water into the cup with the juice. If juice is too tart, add 1/2 teaspoon honey. Drink hot. (I add honey.. so much tastier:)
*also drink green tea and detox tea as often as possible when you aren't able to make the hot lemon water.. to flush out toxins and get antioxidants.
Do This:
-Exercise!:
Duh. Sweat out those toxins and get your circulation flowing normally again:).. I'm especially fond of cardio in these circumstances.
-Exfoliate:
Slough off dead skin cells and refresh your skin (face and body).. alcohol is drying/dehydrating, so rejuvenate your skin and start fresh. A quick fix is adding sugar to your face wash!
-Moisturize:
Airplanes, travel in general, alcohol consumption, and excess salt can all dry out your skin. I use Elizabeth Arden's 8 hour cream(which literally feels like medicinal Vaseline, it's so thick and waxy) at night time to bring my face back to life. Warning-it doesn't smell great and is super thick.. I heard it was made to treat burn victims during Vietnam...with that said, it really hydrates! It's also great for lips, cuticles, etc.

*Bonus- If you have the luxury of having a Whole Foods, a fresh juice store in your town, a juicer in your home, etc.. try to drink at least one fresh pressed green juice a day to replenish lost nutrients and make you feel better all around! I personally love this combo: kale, spinach, parsley, cucumber, celery, romaine, apple, lemon, ginger!

xoxo,
Kara

Fashion Inspiration: Vogue UK October 2013

Spring might have already come to an end, but its influence still hasn't stopped fashion from creating beautiful editorials during fall. This Vogue UK spread has left us wanting more of the fantasy shot by photographer Vanetia Scott. Model, Georgia May Jagger, is captured beautifully wearing pastels, floral print gowns, and delicate lace. Bay Garnett styles the looks to perfection with her pastel palette and mixture of subtle floral prints.

We couldn't have fallen more in love with this fashion fairy tale :)

Beauty: Statement Lips for Fall

Fall is almost here! Although red lips are a year around beauty staple, they are most worn during fall/winter holiday seasons. Wearing red lips with minimal eye makeup (or a simple cat-eye) is the best combo to attain with bold lips. We've brought together our favorite red lip looks from top models backstage at runway shows, and from our magazines.

Daily Om: Gut Response

Our bellies can be wonderful monitors of our emotional health and the truth can always be found there.

So often, emotions that we long to express get stored in our bodies instead. The space where this most often happens is in our bellies. Rather than telling people, our even ourselves, the way we truly feel, we may stuff our true feelings deep inside of us, where they take up space until we are ready to let them go. Stuffing our feelings in our bellies may feel like the “safe” response, since we then don’t really have to deal with our emotions. Yet, doing so can actually be detrimental to our emotional well-being and physical health.

One way to connect with and release your emotions is to do a focused exercise with your stomach area. Take a moment to center yourself with some deep breathing and quiet meditation, relaxing your body fully and turning off the chatter in your brain. With your right hand on your stomach, tell yourself three times: “Please reveal to me my true emotions.” Listen for the answers. Repeat the exercise as many times as you would like, allowing yourself to drop deeper into your body each time. Notice any physical response in the stomach area, whether you have a warm, relaxed feeling in the middle of your body or if you feel tight knots in response to any emotions that do come up. You may even want to write down any answers that come to you. Remember that the body doesn’t lie.

Releasing our pent up feelings from our bellies can prevent disease and allow us to live more authentic and expressive lives. Sometimes, if too much emotional energy builds up inside of us, a blowout can result that can cause discomfort. You can help to alleviate this compression by doing the same exercise and adding sound to your emotional release. The more guttural the sounds released through your mouth, the more emotions you are likely letting go. Releasing your emotions from your belly doesn’t have to be painful and hard; rather, it can be organic and effortless. It’s important not to judge whatever comes up for you. We tend to stuff our feelings in our bellies when we are ashamed of them or not ready to express them. There is nothing wrong with having feelings, whatever they may be. You can’t help your feelings; if anything, you can help yourself by acknowledging the truth of your emotions so you can set yourself free.

Congratulations Kara!

It's been a very special summer for Kara and I giving birth around 3 months apart to our baby girls…Kara our Co-Buyer had her first baby girl, Parker Jane Hatch on August 18th at 10:25am.  All of us at PL couldn't be more excited for her and hubby Ryan on their new little bundle of cuteness.

Kara and I have been pregnant together at the last few markets and can't wait to bring our girls to the upcoming market in October…Look out for multi-tasking mommies; I'm sure you will enjoy some fun pics :).  Our market entourage is growing and we're excited to introduce the new besties (Gracey and Parker) to the group :)…hopefully the besties will follow in their mommies footsteps.

Kara, congratulations on being a momma and the starting steps to your beautiful family.  We LOVE you!  Parker is truly blessed to have a mommy like you :).  Your are beautiful from the inside out and I know Parker will be just the same!

PL Moms: Back to School Lunch Ideas

Back to School Lunch Ideas
Little Italy Chicken Pita
A smart trick to this zesty sandwich is using oil from the sun-dried tomatoes to prepare the vinaigrette. Prepare the chicken filling ahead of time and pack separately. Fill pitas just before eating.

  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sun-dried tomato oil
  • 1 tablespoon chopped drained oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • garlic clove, minced
  • 4 cups shredded cooked chicken breast (about 3/4 pound)
  • 1 cup chopped tomato (about 1 medium)
  • 1/2 cup (2 ounces) grated Asiago cheese
  • 1/4 cup thinly sliced fresh basil
  • (6-inch) pitas, cut in half
  • 3 cups mixed baby greens

Preparation

  1. Combine first 5 ingredients in a large bowl. Stir in chicken, tomato, cheese, and basil. Line each pita half with 1/4 cup greens. Divide chicken mixture evenly among pita halves.
